Photobucket

A few friends from uni and I have started an artist run initiative. Early days yet but you should definitely check it out! Especially if you're an artist, photographer, musician or any other creative from Brisbane, submit your work, we'd love to see it! For now check out the blog or the facebook!

Kodachrome Transparencies

Photobucket

I got these Kodachrome transparencies ages ago at Reverse Garbage and I've been meaning to do something with them for ages. So for lack of any other ideas I put them on my window so they'd catch the light! I kind of love them.

Organizing

I had a little bit of film in my room so I decided to organize the prints into books. It took forever but it was definitely worth it!

Symmetry

Experiments with photo shop! Being bed-ridden has forced me to rethink my project so I've been experimenting with using some of my old photos to create symmetrical patterns much like my original wool stitched canvases. I think the best ones are of nature which create abstracted patterns and create separate geometrical shapes within the image.

It Makes Me Really Angry

It frustrates me to no end when people seem to think that the arts are completely worthless, that they don't add to the value of society or they are somehow lesser than other disciplines or professions. Obviously there are a ridiculous number of social benefits that the arts provide, however, as these benefits seem to not be high on the priorities of those who argue against the arts I will now attempt to see it from an economic stand point. So, here is a world without the arts.

There is no architecture. Goodbye to the beautiful buildings in Rome and Greece. Goodbye to the historic buildings of Melbourne that form the wonderful alleyways that flow throughout the city. Goodbye to the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Taj Mahal, the Hagia Sophia, the Statue of Liberty and many many others. These monuments attract thousands of people each year and bring millions of dollars in tourism to these countries. Not to mention the tourism revenue that arts organizations such as galleries and museums provide. Of the top 10 tourist destinations in the UK, 8 are museums.

There is no advertising or photography. There is no such thing as graphic design. Businesses have no way to connect to a client base other than way of simple text. There is no way to personalise a brand or large company therefore losing potential business.

There is no fashion industry. Retail stores all look the same and carry the same basic clothing. Individuality is non-existant.

There is no entertainment industry. No films, no video games, no music.

When it comes down to it, the arts are a major employer and create vastly more revenue than it costs to cultivate them. The arts make economic sense as well as providing countless social benefits. Society needs the arts and people who say otherwise are ignorant of the facts.

One Hundred!!!

This is my 100th post on this blog! It seems like just yesterday that I started it for the simple reason of keeping my uni work together but it has become so much more. It's a place for me to express myself outside of uni as well. I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I like creating it!

So to the people who contributed to the 4,602 page views that have been recorded to this date, the people from Australia (4,137), the United States (211), Malaysia (37), Indonesia (34), the United Kingdom (31), Germany (23), Canada (10), Portugal (8), Singapore (8) and Denmark (7) I thank you. It still astounds me that people around the world have even seen my blog.

It must also be said that the post about my lovely friend Anna called "Anna Bananna" still holds the record for most page views with a close runner-up in the post about Tom's fantastic Willy Wonka Themed birthday party "Candy Is Dandy, But Liquor Is Quicker". Without people like them it is unlikely that I would have much to write about and I'm sure I'd lack inspiration in terms of art.

Gego

Photobucket

Gego (Gertrude Goldschmidt) is a Venezuelan artist of German birth. With a background in architecture her sculptures explore rigid forms and their relation to space. She usually works with interlocking aluminum and steel tubes, often with small looping links which connect them.

These works are quite similar to some of my experiments with space however they inspire me to possibly work with more rigid material than wool. It would then be possible to explore more rigid forms however I think that is deferring from the purpose. My tutor asked if I thought the project was about space or wool. I've thought about that a lot but I don't think it needs to be separate. I think my works are currently about using the medium of wool in the context of space and working with the chalenges which come with it.

Hlusta

My dear friend Renee asked me the other day if I could recommend some music for her. I started listing off songs and sending her links and HUZZAH I thought, why don't I create a music blog?

So I did.

Music is a huge source of inspiration for me so I thought it necessary for it to be linked to this blog also, so you can find it at http://hlusta.tumblr.com :)

Hlusta is Icelandic for listen, I chose Icelandic because of my obsession with the music of the wonderful jónsi.

Cops and Robbers

On Saturday we gathered to celebrate Belinda's 18th year of residing on this earth. Naturally due to everyone's mutual love for Bejay the partay was going off (in the style of cops and robbers).
